Liberdade
"Liberdade" (Liberty) is a shrine to freedom inspired in part by the current threats to democracy. The work is constructed from salvaged compressed foam often used to insulate commercial buildings. This foam was salvaged from one of my father's construction sites in 2000 and I've been cycling it into my artwork ever since. The surface of Liberdade is adorned with ceramic tiles that resemble Azulejo tiles commonly found on buildings in Portugal. It features flower beds and a grotto that is reminiscent of Bath Tub Madonna shrines found in front yards all over South Eastern Massachusetts.
Liberdade is filled with carnations, some are made of aluminum. These flowers are a traditional symbol of democracy in Portuguese culture. check out: “The Carnation Revolution” This art installation creates a bridge between Portugal's revolutionary past, my own personal history and America's ongoing struggles for social justice. It lovingly presents the immigrant experience as an essential part of being American.
